They say you should never meet your heroes, but when the email arrived asking would I like to talk to Heston about pies, only a total idiot would say no. Now I’ve worked with a few names in this business, but The Man from Bray was without doubt the most pleasant, interesting, and knowledgeable chap I’ve come across.

Me talking to HestonHeston wanted to know about Jeffery Hudson, a dwarf presented in a pie by the Duke of Buckingham to Charles I and his teenage bride Henrietta Maria. He went on to become one of the wonders of the age, fought for the Royalists during the civil war, fled to France, shot a man in a duel, was captured by pirates and spent 25 years as a slave in North Africa before eventually making his way back to England. Real, 'There and Back Again' stuff.

You can watch a clip of Heston and myself here

To find out more about the life and times of Jeffery Hudson, I'd recommend Nick Page's excellent book. There's more on History Today, and wikipedia. Finally here's a portrait of him and the Queen by Van Dyke.
